Sadiq contends with Diaz for La Liga Goal of the Month accolade
Umar Sadiq's goal for Real Sociedad against Osasuna is in contention for the Spanish La Liga Goal of the Month Award for December.
Sadiq made a full return to action after being sidelined for most of last season due to injury. He marked his comeback on November 26 with a spectacular 25-yard goal that contributed to Real Sociedad's 2-1 victory over Sevilla.
This goal was significant as it marked his first for Real Sociedad since September 3, 2022.
The 26-year-old's remarkable goal is now in contention for the award, competing against Brahim Diaz's strike against Villarreal and Aitor Ruibal's goal against Real Madrid.
Sadiq has been named in Jose Peseiro's 41-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Barring any last-minute changes, the former Almeria star is anticipated to secure a spot on the final squad roster for the tournament.
He will be vying for a place with notable players such as Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Cyriel Dessers, Emmanuel Dennis, Terem Moffi, and Paul Onuachu.
Former Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, has expressed support for Sadiq, endorsing him to play a crucial role for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The AFCON tournament is scheduled to commence in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, featuring the Eagles in Group A alongside host Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
Expressing his perspective, Siasia suggested that Peseiro should center his strike force around Sadiq during the tournament.
“Sadiq (Umar) is very good,” Siasia shared with Africa Interviews. “They need to give him a chance and provide him with the kind of confidence he needs. Then he’s going to surprise. We see him playing in his club and he’s doing very well. He can do the same thing here (with the Eagles team).”
