POTM award thrills Flamingos’ Chidi
Harmony Chidi, a Flamingos striker, showed her happiness after winning the Player of the encounter award in Nigeria's 4-0 victory over Ecuador in their second Group A encounter of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic.Chidi did not score in Nigeria's opening 4-1 victory over New Zealand, but he lived up to the hype at Estadio Cibao, Santiago de Los Caballeros, on Saturday night, scoring Nigeria's second goal in the 54th minute as Bankole Olowookere's side continued their impressive performances in South America.
Reacting to her outstanding performance, which culminated in the top award, the young striker stated, "I am the happiest person on the planet because this is a dream come true. I am quite delighted, and I thank God for it. I don't know how to say this since I am overjoyed right now. When it appeared that nothing was working, my coach and teammates pushed me to succeed.
"I also want to thank Nigerians for their support, and I believe that myself and my teammates will make it count."
Nigeria will face the Dominican Republic in their last group game on Wednesday at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo. They aim to finish the group stage with a perfect record after three consecutive wins.
The Flamingos finished third in the previous edition in India and have competed in every edition since its start in 2008, reaching the quarterfinals in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
