Nigeria's Odunayo Adekuoroye, an Olympian, has achieved the top spot globally in the 57 kg category with 49000 points, as per United World Wrestling's latest rankings. Her outstanding performance at the ongoing African Games in Ghana contributed to this achievement, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NA
Adekuoroye secured the gold medal in the 57kg category at the 13th African Games by defeating Zineb Hassoune of Morocco with a pinfall.
Anastasia Nichita of Moldova holds the second position with 47,200 points, followed by Tsugumi Sakurai of Japan in third place with 45,000 points.
Daniel Igali, president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, expressed his delight at Adekuoroye's achievement, despite her limited participation in competitions. He emphasized the importance of this ranking as motivation for thorough preparation for the Olympics.
Reflecting on recent competitions, Igali highlighted Nigeria's success at the African championships in Alexandria, where they secured 9 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals. He mentioned their upcoming focus on the 2024 Oceania/Africa Olympic qualifiers, aiming to secure five or six slots across different wrestling styles.
