Juventus readmitted to European Club Association after Super League failure

Juventus has been reinstated into the European Club Association following the collapse of their attempt to establish a European Super League, as stated by Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the chief of the organization, on Thursday.

The club, which is the most successful in Italy, had withdrawn from the ECA to pursue the creation of the Super League in April 2021. However, the project quickly fell apart due to backlash from fans and opposition from UEFA and FIFA. Al-Khelaifi, who also serves as president of Paris Saint-Germain, expressed his satisfaction in welcoming Juventus back to the ECA family during the General Assembly in Athens, highlighting that all top division clubs in over 20 countries are now ECA members.

Under the leadership of Super League advocate Andrea Agnelli, Juventus had planned to be one of the 12 founding clubs, alongside the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, and several teams from the English Premier League. Since the Super League initiative failed, Agnelli and Juventus have faced severe penalties from the Italian football federation due to a series of financial offenses.

Although the original Super League project has collapsed, there are ongoing efforts to promote a redesigned version of the competition with 64 teams playing in three divisions, led by A22 Sports Management. Additionally, in December last year, the European Union’s Court of Justice ruled that the ban on the Super League enforced by the sport’s existing governing bodies was against EU law.
