Arokodare spearheads Genk's bid for their fifth title

Nigerian forward Tolu Arokodare, Genk's top scorer, maintained his impressive form by scoring in their 1-0 victory over league leaders Union Saint-Gilloise as they kicked off the Belgium First Division A Championship round on Monday.

Arokodare found the net in the 27th minute, securing a strong start for coach Wouter Vrancken's team. With Genk entering the round with 47 points and ranking sixth from the regular season, they are now focused on securing another title, aiming to replicate their success from the 2018/2019 season.

Vrancken commended Arokodare and the rest of the team for their outstanding performance after the match.

"The energy and faith displayed by the team today, despite numerous absences, were incredible," said the coach, who aims to guide the team to another league title. "In the first playoff match, you want to give everything. It's evident what can be achieved in such moments."

"I expect everyone eligible to play to be prepared," he continued. "This is an opportunity to showcase your qualities. I hope the players will make selection decisions challenging for me in the upcoming weeks."

The former Amiens and FC Koln striker, who joined the Belgian outfit in January 2023, has amassed 12 goals and three assists in 42 games across all competitions for KRC Genk.

He netted eight goals in 29 appearances throughout the regular First Division A season, adding three more in the qualifiers for the Champions League and UEFA Conference League.

Their upcoming playoff match sees them face champions Antwerp, a team boasting the talents of two Nigerians, Chidera Ejuke and Alhassan Yusuf.
