Abbas pledges to provide Nigerians with the deserving good governance they seek
Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, the newly elected Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, has assured Nigerians of their rightful share of good governance. In his acceptance and inaugural speech on Wednesday, Abbas pledged to lead his fellow members in delivering the governance that the people deserve.
Expressing his determination to build upon the achievements of the previous House, Abbas declared that the 10th House would not only sustain but exceed the progress made by its predecessor. He emphasized the collaborative efforts of the lawmakers in undertaking their responsibilities, emphasizing their commitment to introducing reforms and innovations that would benefit all Nigerians.
Additionally, the Speaker announced that the House of Representatives will unveil their legislative agenda in the coming weeks, outlining the framework that will guide their actions and initiatives.
Abbas emphasized the importance of close collaboration and interdependence between the House, the executive, and the judiciary in order to ensure the delivery of the quality governance that Nigerians rightly deserve.
We find ourselves at a critical moment in our country's history, where both challenges and opportunities lie ahead.
Our foremost commitment is to enact laws that will enhance the well-being of our fellow citizens, uphold social justice, and propel sustainable development.
We will prioritize the reinforcement of our security infrastructure, working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to combat insurgency, terrorism, and all types of criminal activities.
Our objective is to contribute to the establishment of a secure and stable environment that nurtures economic prosperity and social harmony.
Following a gracious visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) at the State House in Abuja, Abbas took the opportunity to address the press.
He made it clear that he and his fellow lawmakers would not hesitate to take action against the executive branch if it ever acted against the best interests of the Nigerian people.
Asserting the independence of the 10th House of Representatives, Abbas emphasized that they would not serve as a mere rubber stamp for the executive, but rather exercise their legislative powers with diligence and accountability.
"We will always maintain our independence and establish effective communication and cooperation with the executive when necessary.
"In instances where conflicts of interest arise, or when we perceive actions from the executive that are not aligned with the public's interests, they can expect us to oppose such actions."
In the official press release, President Tinubu urged the members of the 10th National Assembly (NASS) to swiftly commence their duties, as Nigerians genuinely deserve progressive and effective governance.
On Tuesday, Tinubu extended his congratulations to Senator Godswill Akpabio, the new Senate President, and Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He also encouraged them to maintain the same level of passion and dedication they demonstrated during the leadership contest as they fulfill their responsibilities to their constituents and the nation.
Abbas secured a resounding victory by garnering 353 votes during the roll call of members-elect. Out of the total 360 members participating in the inauguration process of the 10th National Assembly, his successful emergence as Speaker showcased the strong support he received from his fellow representatives.
