Woman detained by police following the discovery of three deceased children in a residence in the UK

A woman has been apprehended on suspicion of murder following the discovery of three deceased children at a residence in Bristol, United Kingdom.

Avon and Somerset Police found the deceased children during a welfare check at Blaise Walk, Sea Mills, around 00:40 GMT.

A statement from the police force indicated that the young children were pronounced dead at the scene. The arrested woman, aged 42, is currently in police custody at a hospital.

The police force mentioned that the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) had been informed due to "prior police contact."

Chief Inspector Vicks Hayward-Melen expressed, "This is an incredibly tragic and heartbreaking incident in which three children have sadly died. My sincere condolences go to the children’s loved ones, and we will be ensuring they are offered support through our family liaison unit. We believe this to be an isolated incident and there is no further risk to the wider community."

The IOPC reported that it had been notified of the incident by Avon and Somerset Police, with the police force indicating that there had been prior police contact earlier this month.

A spokesperson additionally stated, "We have asked for a written referral containing additional details about the previous contact, and upon receipt, we will evaluate it to ascertain if any further action on our part is necessary."

Mark Shelford, Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset, emphasized the need to investigate how "such an appalling event has occurred."

Expressing his sorrow, he stated, "I am deeply saddened by the news of the deaths of three children today in Sea Mills. The deaths of these children are heartbreaking. My thoughts are with all those who knew and cared for these children and with the local community, who I know will be impacted."

He added, "The police have made an arrest and believe this to be an isolated incident. They have assessed that there is no further risk to the wider community."

There are inquiries to be made regarding how such a dreadful event occurred and what measures could have been taken to prevent it. For now, I urge people to allow the police to conduct their investigation.

Bristol North West MP Darren Jones expressed being "deeply saddened by the tragic news from Sea Mills today." He added, "My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the children, and my thanks go to our emergency services who responded."

The city's mayor, Marvin Rees, remarked, "It's almost impossible to find the words to describe this afternoon's devastating news. My thoughts are with all who knew these three young children."

"We will collaborate with schools, the community, and Avon and Somerset Police to provide support to individuals."

West of England Metro Mayor Dan Norris expressed that the news was "tragic and heartbreaking." He added, "My thoughts are very much with those who knew and loved these children. I cannot imagine the pain and shock they are feeling."
