United States and United Kingdom have announced sanctions targeting Iran's drone program
The US and UK announced extensive sanctions on Iran's military drone program in response to its recent attack on Israel. Washington is targeting 16 individuals and two entities involved in Iran's UAV production, including engine types used in the attack. The UK is also imposing sanctions on several Iranian military organizations, individuals, and entities linked to Iran's UAV and ballistic missile industries. This follows Tehran's direct military strike on Israel, retaliation for an earlier air strike in Damascus attributed to Israel, resulting in the deaths of seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
More than 300 drones and missiles were deployed in a widespread assault, primarily aimed at Israel, but were largely intercepted by Israel and its allies, including the US and the UK, resulting in minimal damage.
Following the attacks, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, affirmed Israel's prerogative to defend itself.
"In concert with the United Kingdom and in consultation with our partners and allies, we are promptly and decisively addressing Iran's unparalleled assault on Israel," stated Janet Yellen, the US Treasury Secretary.
The Treasury is employing economic measures to disrupt crucial aspects of Iran's malign operations, including its UAV program and the revenue sustaining its terrorist activities," she elaborated.
"We will persist in leveraging our sanctions authority to counter Iran with additional measures in the coming days and weeks," she affirmed.
In conjunction with sanctions targeting Iran's UAV program, the US is also imposing sanctions on five firms supplying components to Iran's steel sector.
"Iran's metals industry generates substantial revenue, mainly from steel exports, amounting to several billion dollars annually," stated the Treasury Department, further indicating sanctions on an automaker providing "material support" to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
