United Kingdom has announced that Nigerian students and foreign students cannot bring family members

As part of efforts to reduce net migration, the United Kingdom has implemented a policy prohibiting foreign students from bringing their family members into the country. The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, announced this ban.

Starting from January 2024, the Home Secretary has stated that all foreign students, excluding those enrolled in postgraduate research programs, will be prohibited from bringing their spouses, children, or parents to the UK. Currently, the UK allows dependents to accompany their spouses or parents who hold valid student visas.

Braverman expressed concerns about an "unanticipated" surge in the number of dependents, emphasizing that the economic advantages brought by students should not compromise the Tory commitment to reducing immigration.

there will be a comprehensive review of the maintenance requirement for students and their dependents, along with a stringent crackdown on unscrupulous education agents who prioritize immigration over education in their application processes.

The ban will impact all master's students and some other post-graduates, except for highly skilled Ph.D. students enrolled in programs lasting between 3 to 5 years.

If enforced, this crackdown will have significant implications for Nigerian students planning to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK, as they contributed to the highest rise in the number of dependents accompanying individuals with study visas in 2022.
