Tragedy as Nine-Day-Old Infant and Mother Lose Lives in Ondo Building Collapse

Akure Tragedy: Mother and Nine-Day-Old Infant Perish in Building Collapse

However, the brother of the newborn and the grandmother narrowly escaped death, sustaining injuries in the process.

The victims' identities remained unknown at the time of reporting.

The tragic incident occurred on Ayedun Street, near Hospital/Egbe road, in Akure metropolis, while the woman and her baby were inside the building. They reportedly died instantly.

An eyewitness, who chose not to reveal their identity, described the incident as a pathetic death. An overhead water tank mounted near the storey building suddenly collapsed. There was no sign that the concrete supporting the water tank was weak. The incident was too sudden. Unfortunately, the baby, christened on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, was inside the building with her mother when the tank fell on the structure.

"The noise from the falling water tank drew the attention of neighbors, prompting them to rush to the scene. Unfortunately, they were unable to provide assistance as the victims were trapped beneath the debris of the collapsed building.

"All attempts to rescue them proved futile. Security personnel later arrived at the scene to evacuate the bodies. The injured victims received immediate attention and were transported to a nearby hospital."

It was revealed that the husband of the deceased had left the building for an appointment when the tragic incident occurred.

"He received a distress call on his mobile phone, and upon rushing back, he witnessed the heartbreaking sight of his wife and baby trapped under the collapsed building, unable to offer any assistance."

"The State Police spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, was unavailable for comment; however, a senior police officer has confirmed the incident."
