TotalEnergies reaches 94% local content milestone – Director

TotalEnergies EP, an oil giant, has announced that it has achieved more than 94% local content.

Mr. Obi Imemba, the firm's Executive Director of Joint Venture Assets, shared this insight on Wednesday during a panel session on the sub-theme "Next Frontier for Nigerian Content: Divestment and Offshore Opportunities" at the ongoing 13th Practical Nigerian Content Forum in Yenagoa.

The conference is titled "Deepening the Next Frontier for Nigerian Content Implementation."

"We achieved more than 94% local content in terms of 100% engineering, installation, construction, and installation, among other things, during the COVID period. We were able to train a significant number of welders, fitters, and technicians.

"We are very proud of our intentionality in developing the capacity of our community members. This is very important for us in everything we do. Imemba stated that for each project, we identify people from the community to whom we will provide training at all levels.

Imemba reiterated TotalEnergies' commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development in the Niger Delta and across Nigeria, with the goal of improving the well-being of local communities.

He emphasised the company's commitment to preserving the region's biodiversity and developing young talent.

He acknowledged that climate change is a global issue and stated that the company ensures that its activities do not harm the environment.

"There is an increasing demand for energy, so we will continue to produce it here; however, we must do so in a sustainable manner. And there are many different perspectives on sustainability.

"When we talk about sustainability, some people only talk and think about climate. However, the first pillar of sustainability is people. And this is where capacity building comes in for those who will be the anchors that will drive production in the long term.

"For example, there is a knowledge gap that we discovered about 25-30 years ago about the people who are prepared to work in the industry, whether it is shallow water, onshore, or deep offshore. We used to go on recruitment campaigns in the United States, Europe, and all over the world looking for talent.

"But we became intentional in 2003, when we founded the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Uniport, a tripartite partnership between the IFP School in Paris, Uniport, and us (TotalEnergies)." This school has been open for 21 years and has produced over 700 master's degree holders.

"So, once they finish, we offer them a one-year internship at TotalEnergies' offshore and onshore offices. Following that, there is a possibility of recruitment. Many of them are recruited both within TotalEnergies and from outside sources," he explained.
