Tackle food inflation, Ex- NDDC chair tells Tinubu
Ibim Semenitari, a former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, has urged President Bola Tinubu to address the issue of food inflation, lamenting that underprivileged Nigerians can no longer afford a daily cup of garri to drink."The first challenge was food security. "If people can even eat," she explained.
Semenitari made the announcement during a sociopolitical program broadcast on Channels Television on Sunday.
She proclaimed, "Nigeria needs recalibration," adding that someone must see that things are not going well and take decisive action.
She noted that the President needed to consider what type of legacy he wanted to leave for Nigerians.
She said, "The President should think about legacy: 'When I'm done, what will I be remembered for?'" And the truth is that his assistants cannot assess that since legacy is a personal matter. Sycophants cannot give you this.
"Nigerians literally cannot eat. I am not talking about three square meals. We aren't even talking about three-round meals; we're talking about one meal every day since the cost of garri, a staple, has increased.
"People now pay N22,000 for a basin of garri, which used to cost N6,000. If you didn't have enough money for soup, you would feed your children garri, which they would drink without sugar. "Now they can't."
The former Rivers State Commissioner for Information stated that Tinubu should demonstrate leadership by refraining from spending the nation's limited resources on a brand-new private plane during the austerity period.
Young people have claimed hunger as one of the reasons for their protests since Thursday, when they began the statewide #EndBadGovernance marches.
Nigeria is currently experiencing one of its most severe economic crises in recent memory due to rising living and energy costs, which have been attributed to the government's dual policy of ending the petrol subsidy and unifying the foreign exchange windows in May 2023.
