Speak up against reckless driving in festive season, FRSC urges passengers

Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, has urged passengers on Nigerian roads to be vigilant and engage drivers throughout their journeys.

Mohammed made the statement on Tuesday in Ilorin, Kwara State, during the launch of the 2024 Ember Months campaign with the theme "Speak up against dangerous driving: crashes kill more passengers than drivers."

Mohammed, represented by Muftau Irekeola, the FRSC Sector Commander in Kwara State, stated that many Nigerians travel during the Yuletide season, resulting in increased traffic, congestion, road crashes, and, regrettably, loss of life and property.

"This situation is worsened by the reckless behaviours of some motorists, creating a distressing environment for travellers, government agencies, and stakeholders, including the FRSC," said the spokesperson.

To promote a safer motoring environment in the country, the FRSC has ordered the immediate launch of extensive public enlightenment and sensitization campaigns in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as increased enforcement measures.

FRSC warns motorists as 13 people die in Kaduna-Abuja road crash.
According to him, the new policies seek not only to improve road transportation by encouraging responsible driving behaviour, but also to establish Nigeria as a safety-conscious nation in the global community.

The FRSC will engage stakeholders over the next three days, from Tuesday to Thursday, with town hall meetings, motorcade events, and advocacy sessions at transit, rest areas, and loading bays. "This approach is based on the need to engage passengers and encourage them to assert their rights, thereby curbing drivers' excesses, as statistics show that more passengers are killed in road traffic crashes than drivers," according to him.

The Corps Marshal went on to explain that the FRSC is focusing on re-educating passengers and assisting them in understanding their rights. He emphasized that drivers and passengers should agree that while drivers ensure that passengers arrive at their destinations safely, passengers have the right to remain uninjured, unharmed, and respected throughout their journey.

He also advised drivers to be responsible on the road.

Members of the Road Transport Employers Association, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, and the Nigerian Tricycle Owners Association all attended the event.
