Seven South Sudanese peace delegates killed in attack

A Norwegian humanitarian organization said Thursday that seven South Sudanese delegates who attended a peace conference in the country's southeast were killed.

"We strongly condemn the attack on civilians and humanitarian aid workers," Dagfinn Hoybraten, the head of Norwegian Church Aid, said in a statement.

"The attack demonstrates how difficult and complex it is to work in a country where security is constantly changing," he added.

After attending a peace conference and being offered a ride in NCA cars, the seven were killed on Saturday in Imehejek, Eastern Equatoria state.

According to NCA, three employees from South Sudan escaped unharmed.

The humanitarian organization provided no additional information, stating that the attack was still under investigation.

In South Sudan, Patrick Oting, the information minister for Eastern Equatoria state, told AFP that the attack was "unfortunate," adding that the conference was intended to defuse tensions between two communities over cattle raids.

"It's an unfortunate situation; in fact, these people were (here) for the peace dialogue mission to Imehejek," he explained.
