Sanwo-Olu states that structures failing integrity tests will face demolition
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to demolishing buildings that do not pass its integrity test. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this statement following the collapse of 14 buildings adjacent to the two that caught fire at Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island on Tuesday.
"Many residential units have been converted into warehouses. I am certain that more buildings will collapse," Sanwo-Olu stated unequivocally.
"I have just concluded the assessment of a tragic incident that could have been prevented. It's unfortunate that access was denied to first responders for several hours. This fire has been burning for over 48 hours and is still raging.
As of now, approximately 14 houses have been affected, and there's a possibility of more collapsing after thorough examination. While we await the full report, I refrain from speculating. However, from initial observations, it appears to be a case of gross negligence," said Governor Sanwo-Olu at the fire site.
He also announced the indefinite closure of Dosunmu Market but assured affected traders of government assistance. "We will not hesitate to demolish any structure that does not adhere to our construction regulations. The safety of lives, property, and the environment is paramount. We will support those impacted by the fire in getting back on their feet.
It's disheartening to spend precious resources on avoidable accidents when there are more pressing matters that demand attention," the governor lamented.
