Power crisis worsens as National grid collapses again
Nigeria experienced another national grid failure on Wednesday, leaving many parts of the country without power. The collapse occurred just after 11 a.m., resulting in a significant drop in power generation. At 11 a.m., the grid was generating 4,064 megawatts, but this figure had dropped to 1,203MW by noon and had reached zero by 1 p.m.
Attempts to contact Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria, were unsuccessful. However, she informed our correspondent that she was attending an event and would be unable to respond at that time.
According to sources within power generation companies, a grid disturbance occurred on Wednesday morning.
According to reports, the system tripped before midday, resulting in a widespread blackout.
This is the first grid collapse in 2025, following a similar incident in January.
The national grid experienced 12 collapses in 2024 and more than 100 disruptions over the previous decade.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company acknowledged the development in a statement posted to its X account.
"Dear valued customer, We regret to inform you that at 11:34 a.m. today, a system disturbance occurred on the national grid, resulting in a power outage throughout our franchise areas. While gradual restoration has begun, we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore power as soon as the grid stabilises. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we strive to better serve you."
As of press time, efforts were underway to restore power in affected areas.
