Over 70,000 Nigerians to benefit from GEF mini-grids – Agency

The Africa Mini-Grids Program, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility as part of a larger effort to increase rural electrification, will benefit over 70,000 Nigerians.

The United Nations Development Programme is working with Nigeria's Rural Electrification Agency to support this initiative.

The Rural Electrification Agency made this announcement on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter).

Rea stated that it has signed grant agreements with 18 Renewable Energy Service Companies to establish 23 new mini-grids in Nigeria.

This initiative seeks to improve access to clean, dependable, and affordable energy for underserved and off-grid communities.

The AMP is a multi-country initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of renewable energy solutions in rural communities.

"70,000+ Nigerians to be impacted as the Global Environment Facility (@theGEF), @UNDP and Rural Electrification Agency (REA) Sign Grant Agreements with 18 Renewable Energy Service Companies, to Deliver 23 New Mini-Grids Nationwide through the GEF-Funded Africa Mini-Grids Program (AMP)," REA announced on Twitter.

According to the REA, the chosen RESCOs will use innovative renewable energy technologies, such as solar hybrid mini-grids, to power homes, businesses, and public facilities.

This project supports Nigeria's goal of achieving universal energy access and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.

The installation of 23 mini-grids will power thousands of remote households, small businesses, and healthcare facilities.

A steady supply of electricity will help local businesses expand, create jobs, and improve the overall quality of life in rural communities.
