Osun State to unveil first climate action plan

The Osun State Government has announced that work is underway on its first Climate Action Plan, which will serve as a guide for public, private businesses, and individuals on how to reduce the state's greenhouse gas emissions.

In a statement obtained in Osogbo on Saturday, Chinwe Obuaku, the state governor's Consultant on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Sustainable Development, stated that the plan would help protect the environment from the negative effects of climate change.

Obuaku also stated that work on the plan began in the year 2023 with the governor's creation of an Advisory Council and the state's presence at COP28, and that the plan would be forwarded to the state House of Assembly.
She also stated that the Office of the Consultant, in collaboration with the Department of Climate Change within the Ministry of Environment and Sanitation, would organize and prioritize a variety of actions and policies to help the state's climate goals align with other states and national plans, as well as build on the state's long history of stewardship over the last few decades.

The statement reads, in part, "Osun state's Climate Action Plan is now in the drafting stage. It is a document that advises the government, businesses, and individuals on how to minimize the community's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and protect the environment.

"We have begun with some early actions and require widespread engagement from the people of Osun State. Moruf Adedapo, Adeleke's Senior Special Assistant on Climate Change, defined the state's climate change agenda as congruent with national and international best practices for mitigating the devastating consequences of climate change in August 2023.
Speaking following a visit to the National Council on Climate Change offices in Abuja, Adedapo praised Adeleke for his foresight and advanced awareness of the climate crisis even before assuming state leadership.
