Motorist dies in Edo due to refuse dump site

BENIN CITY – A tragic incident unfolded in the Ukhun Kingdom of Esan West local government area, Edo State, a few days ago. Irete Ehikioya, the son-in-law of the kingdom, lost his life in a horrifying car accident. His body was tragically burnt beyond recognition in the Sienna car with registration number YAB 842 DB that he was driving.

It was reported that the accident was caused by the poor condition of the road and the haphazard dumping of waste by refuse contractors. These contractors frequently left refuse in the middle of the road, narrowing the two-lane access to just one.

In an effort to avoid a direct collision with a tipper truck, Irete crashed into a burning refuse heap on the road, resulting in a blaze that led to his tragic demise. He is survived by his wife and three children.

The 8-kilometer road, constructed in 1980 by the former governor of old Bendel state, the late Professor Ambrose Folorunso Alli, has seen minimal improvement since then, with successive governments neglecting its rehabilitation or reconstruction. This has left a significant portion of the road in a deteriorating condition.

Motorists have noted that this neglect has isolated the community, especially during the rainy season, disrupting the smooth flow of goods and services in the area.

In response to this situation, the Onojie of Ukhun Kingdom, His Royal Highness, Zaiki Aboiralor Omoigiade, has urged the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, the Honorable Commissioner of Environment & Sustainability, Arc. Joshua Omokhodion, and the Chairman of Esan West Local Government Council, Mr. Collins Aigbogun, to utilize their positions to repair the road and address the issue of indiscriminate refuse disposal, thereby preventing further tragedies on the road.
