Minister condemns brass refinery abandonment, vows project revamp
Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), condemned the abandonment of the Brass Modern Refinery project in Bayelsa State as unacceptable.The minister stated this during an inspection visit to Brass Local Government Area, where he also evaluated the Ewa-Ama road project that leads to the Brass Petroleum Products Terminal.
According to the minister's spokesperson, Nneamaka Okafor, Lokpobiri reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to revitalizing key oil and gas infrastructure in the Niger Delta.
Accompanied by Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Lokpobiri emphasized that completing ongoing projects in the region remains a key mandate of President Bola Tinubu's administration.
He assured that the government intends to complete the projects within the president's first two years in office.
"It is unacceptable that such a strategic project has been left in this condition for so long. "The federal government remains committed to completing critical oil and gas infrastructure, such as the Brass Refinery, to create jobs and drive economic growth in the region," he stated.
During his visit, the minister met with representatives from the host community and commended them on their peaceful stance in the face of existing challenges.
He encouraged them to support the federal government's initiatives and reassured them that their concerns had been addressed.
The minister urged the host community to keep the peace, stating that stability is essential for attracting investment and development.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to creating opportunities for the people of Brass and the entire Niger Delta region.
"I sincerely appreciate the people of Brass' patience and cooperation. Your help is invaluable, and I assure you that we will work tirelessly to resolve these issues and complete this project," he added.
