Gas shortage: Transcorp Power to generate additional 150MW electricity
Transcorp Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Owen Omogiafo, has stated that Transcorp Power is aiming to produce an additional 150 megawatts of electricity, despite existing gas supply challenges impacting its thermal plants.
In an interview with Arise News at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Saudi Arabia, Omogiafo emphasized the company's dedication to expanding its energy production capabilities.
She mentioned that Transcorp has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Rural Electrification Agency to boost power generation through renewable energy sources, with the goal of diversifying its energy portfolio and tackling supply issues.
“We are diligently working to bridge the energy gap. One of our priorities at Transcorp Group is to enhance energy availability by investing in and forming partnerships in renewable energy. Just last week, we signed an MoU with the Rural Education Agency of Nigeria that will enable us to add 150 megawatts of capacity to the Nigerian energy landscape,” she stated.
The CEO of Transcorp Group expressed her worries regarding a considerable gas shortage that is restricting the company's ability to generate power.
She pointed out that the Afam power plant in Rivers State is capable of producing 301 megawatts, but is currently generating only 100 megawatts because of these gas supply constraints.
“Nigeria has an installed capacity of around 13,000 megawatts, yet we are only achieving approximately 5,000 megawatts. When I consider one of my power facilities, the Afam power plant in Rivers State, I have an available capacity to generate 301 megawatts. However, it may surprise you that I am currently only producing 100 megawatts. Why is this? A gas shortage.
“If we had a robust integrated gas-to-power strategy, it would address the gap we are facing in our country, and if we extend this approach across Africa, we would be able to unleash and unlock the potential within our resource-rich continent. Then we would be among the leaders in this sector,” she asserted.
