Commencement of Nigeria Air's operations set for October
Amid the persistent controversies surrounding the introduction of the new national carrier, Nigeria Air, new signs have emerged suggesting that the airline is scheduled to begin its flight operations in October of this year.
Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Mesfin Tasew, revealed this information during an interview with Bloomberg TV.
Initially introduced at the Farnborough International Airshow in London back in 2018, the new carrier's journey began. However, a noteworthy twist occurred in May 2023 when Nigeria's former Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, inaugurated the airline with an aircraft merely 48 hours before the conclusion of his tenure, causing a widespread outcry across the nation.
During the course of the interview, Tasew elucidated, "The airline is set to initiate operations with a fleet comprising two wide-bodied planes and six narrow-bodied aircraft. Our eagerness lies in witnessing the airline take flight and establish connections between the local and international markets."
He continued, "Ethiopian Airlines will oversee the operational management. This well-established model aims to provide Nigeria with a distinctive flag carrier. Our core intention is to cultivate a successful airline for Nigeria."
Tasew specified, "We hold a 49 percent ownership share, while the Nigerian government retains 5 percent, and the remaining ownership is held by other institutional investors."
