Obesity, as an independent disease and a key cause of multiple chronic diseases, has emerged as a serious public health concern in China, according to the report.

According to the standards, it is the country's sixth biggest cause of death and disability.

They offer precise guidelines and standards for clinical nutrition, pharmacological therapy, surgical treatment, and behavioural and psychological interventions.

Other restrictions include exercise intervention for obesity, maintaining the safety and quality of medical care, and protecting patients' health rights, according to Zhang Zhongtao, director of the guideline draughting committee.
