Bayelsa governor asserts that Dickson avoids engaging in godfatherism
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, disclosed that his predecessor, Senator Seriake Dickson, does not assume the role of a political godfather. Diri commended Dickson's exemplary conduct and characterized their relationship as harmonious and enduring.
The governor made these remarks during his Christmas visit to Toru-Orua, Dickson’s hometown in the Sagbama Local Government Area of the state. This information was conveyed in a press release issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, on Thursday.
Diri assumed office as the governor of Bayelsa State in 2020 following the Supreme Court's nullification of David Lyon's victory in the governorship poll.
Diri highlighted that since stepping down from the governorship in 2020, Senator Seriake Dickson, who currently represents Bayelsa West in the Senate, has provided support without being domineering. He emphasized that the unity between them has significantly contributed to the peace and development of the state.
The governor reminisced about their enduring relationship, tracing back to their time in the Ijaw National Congress and as commissioners during the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration in the state. Diri expressed confidence that this bond would endure.
Once more, he conveyed his appreciation to Dickson for playing a pivotal role in his succession as governor and for the support extended during the November 11 governorship election in the state.
He emphasized the importance of unity among leaders and the state's populace, assuring them that his second term would be devoted to elevating the state to greater accomplishments.
Diri remarked, “Today marks another occasion for celebration. Recall that in our initial year, we faced some challenges, making it challenging to undertake significant initiatives during that period."
"But since 2021, we have established this tradition of the annual visit, and it has persisted. There is nothing more revitalizing than the realization that we are alive and together on this day. The history of successors and predecessors in Nigeria is often challenging, but in Bayelsa, it's a different story.
"I express my heartfelt gratitude for your patience and acceptance. In a time when many are tempted by godfatherism, you have chosen a different path. We have collaborated and shared common ground, setting an example for others.
"In politics, tolerance and acceptance are crucial for progress. Today, our joy stems from our united efforts. We entered the elections as a unified front. I take this opportunity once again to thank the people of Bayelsa. You have done a commendable job in maintaining peace in our state. To those we may have unintentionally offended, please find it in your hearts to forgive us."
In response, the former governor commended Diri for upholding the tradition of the annual visit initiated three years ago, describing it as a source of refreshment. Dickson emphasized that the visit symbolizes brotherhood, love, and peace, urging the people to embrace a similar spirit of unity to propel the state forward.
While extending congratulations to Diri for his electoral triumph, the senator praised him for his accomplishments in office and expressed confidence in his ability to achieve even more during his second term.
He stated, “Despite your demanding schedule, you consistently make time for visits. This marks the third visit, and we are grateful for it. With the agreement of the leaders present, on January 3, pending your approval, we plan to reciprocate the visit in Sampou.
“This visit is the first since your re-election. Although we had visited previously to convey our congratulations, it remains my duty to felicitate with you and your capable deputy on your resounding victory. Our state has made strides due to maturity and brotherly relations, and we hope for its continued stability.
“I seize this opportunity to express gratitude to the good people of our state and everyone who played a role in ensuring the election was credible and free from violence. Thank you all for your presence. This tradition is commendable, and I believe it should persist even beyond your next four years.”
