Aviation regulators to assess Lekki airport site before construction – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that aviation regulators will inspect the proposed Lekki International Airport site this week, which is a significant step towards its construction.

During his visit to Alaro City, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration's support for the Lekki International Airport and other key infrastructure projects.

In a statement issued on March 8, 2025, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, emphasised the government's commitment to advancing these developments to boost Lagos' economy and transportation infrastructure.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated that the inspection, scheduled for the second week of March, is an important step towards obtaining the necessary approvals to begin construction.

"Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said on Saturday that his administration is committed to delivering the proposed Lekki International Airport and other iconic infrastructure projects across the state.

"He said regulators in the aviation industry will arrive in Lagos State next week for a review and site inspection that will lead to the commencement of the construction of the Lekki International Airport, "which will help future investments in the State," the statement read.

Sanwo-Olu described the Lekki International Airport as a critical component of Lagos State's long-term infrastructure strategy to attract investment and stimulate economic growth in the Lekki corridor.

In February 2025, the state government reaffirmed its commitment by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with international construction firm Summa Group for the airport's expansion.

The Lekki International Airport, which will complement the Lekki Free Trade Zone and Lekki Deep Sea Port, is expected to improve connectivity, attract foreign investment, and reduce congestion at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, thereby strengthening Lagos' status as a global business hub.
