After years of infertility, a woman at the age of 70 successfully gives birth to twins
A 70-year-old woman from Uganda has welcomed the birth of twins, as announced by her doctor on Thursday. Safina Namukwaya expressed her happiness at the miraculous arrival of the twins, born on Wednesday at a medical facility in the capital, Kampala, where she had undergone fertility treatment.
"Delivering twins to Africa's oldest mother at 70 years is an exceptional achievement," stated Dr. Edward Tamale Sali, the overseeing physician for her pregnancy and delivery.
He mentioned that both the mother and the newborns, a boy and a girl, were still under the care of the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre, which he established, and were in good health.
Expressing her joy, Namukwaya, residing in the rural area of Masaka, approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of Kampala, said, "There is no way to express my joy at this moment." She emphasized the miracle of having twins at the age of 70 when societal expectations often deem such occurrences impossible.
Namukwaya revealed that she had given birth to a girl in 2020 after facing ridicule as a "cursed woman" who had struggled to conceive previously. Her first husband passed away in 1992, leaving her childless, and she met her current partner in 1996.
However, she expressed disappointment that her partner had not visited her since she came to the hospital for delivery. Namukwaya speculated, "Maybe he is not happy that I delivered twins because men don’t want to know you are carrying more than one child in a womb for fear of maybe responsibilities that come with that."
