Abia communities raise concerns about erosion as the federal government halts road construction proj

The residents of Amokwe Amiyi Community and Oguduasa in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State are expressing their concern about the looming threat of erosion. This concern arises from the abrupt cessation of construction work on the Abia State University/Ahaba Imenyi Road project by a Chinese company, a decision reportedly made by the Federal Government.

A member of the community and former Senator representing Abia North, including Afikpo, during the second Republic, Senator Emma Nwaka, voiced the concerns of the residents, expressing dismay at the deteriorating condition of the road.

He expressed deep apprehension about how the current state of the road has made the entire community, which is already susceptible to erosion, vulnerable to an imminent threat of gully erosion.

Senator Nwaka stated on Thursday, "It is disheartening that the construction company, aware of the impending work stoppage due to inadequate funding, proceeded to remove the existing asphalt on that section and excavated the topsoil, thus leaving the subsoil exposed to the harsh weather conditions during the rainy season."

"Amokwe Amiyi, my home community, possesses a natural predisposition to erosion due to its sandy terrain and location on a hill slope," Senator Nwaka stated.

He went on to explain, "With the subsoil recently excavated, the velocity of floodwaters during rainfall has significantly increased, posing a direct threat to people's residences. If this situation persists unchecked, the community faces the looming danger of erosion-induced destruction. Adding to the predicament, the construction company has left the drainage system they were constructing incomplete."
