A fatal accident occurs as a truck collides on a bridge in Lagos
An unidentified male lost his life in a truck accident on the Otedola Bridge in the direction of Berger, Lagos State. The incident occurred on a Tuesday morning.
According to Taofiq Adebayo, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the victim, identified as a motor boy, tragically fell off and passed away instantly as the truck, loaded with wheat, overturned during heavy rainfall.
Adebayo further mentioned that Oduyebo Oluwole 'Zebra' (Zone 2) reported that this fatal accident resulted in significant congestion for commuters traveling along the 7Up-Berger section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
He stated, "Initial investigations indicate that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle when he realized the brakes had failed while traveling at a high speed in heavy rain."
"Oluwole affirmed that the motor boy's lifeless body was retrieved beneath the Otedola bridge and promptly transferred to the Lagos Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) by Lastma personnel.
"He additionally verified that once the trans-loading of wheat into another truck was completed, the truck was successfully removed from the Otedola Bridge. As a result, the previously obstructed section of the expressway was fully reopened to vehicular traffic around 5:30 pm."
"Additional emergency responders present at the accident site comprised LASEMA, SEHMU, officers from the Isheri Police Division, and concerned passersby.
In addition to the emergency situation resulting from the accident, the bridge area experienced flooding due to the heavy rainfall. Motorists were observed traveling at reduced speeds as they approached the bridge, contributing to traffic congestion. The traffic situation persisted until the floodwaters subsided several hours later."
