Borno State pledges specialized care for elderly individuals

The government of Borno State has committed to hiring specialists to provide healthcare services for elderly individuals in all its healthcare facilities throughout the state. The Commissioner of Health, Prof. Baba Mallam Gana, shared this initiative in Maiduguri on Thursday, announcing the establishment of a dedicated department for the treatment of elderly individuals at the Borno State University Teaching Hospital.

Prof. Gana made these remarks during the launch of the Borno State chapter of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Elderly Support Scheme, initiated by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The launch included the distribution of N100,000 and a 50kg bag of rice to each of the 250 beneficiaries, along with a medical outreach to assess their health status.

"The state government is committed to deploying specialized doctors for the treatment of elderly individuals in all our healthcare facilities. Additionally, a dedicated department for the treatment of the elderly will be established at the Borno State University Teaching Hospital upon its completion," he declared.

Prof. Gana further revealed that medical personnel opting to work in rural areas would receive a 30 percent salary increase.

The commissioner explained that the medical outreach aimed to diagnose age-related ailments, including blood pressure, blood sugar, eye tests, hearing tests, and mental health assessments.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, represented by Borno State's First Lady, Dr. Falmata Zulum, mentioned that the 250 recipients chosen from the 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state were aged 65 years and above.
