Dr. Gbonjubola Abiri, a consultant psychiatrist, has outlined indicators of mental health concerns to be vigilant about and emphasized the importance of seeking medical advice promptly. He encourages individuals to take a proactive approach to mental health, cautioning that even subtle shifts in mood or behavior may signify the need for assistance.
Abiri conveyed this information during an interview with Channels Television on Thursday.
He mentioned that noticeable alterations in sleep patterns, appetite, or social withdrawal can serve as indicators of underlying issues.
"One of the signs to pay attention to—contrary to the common belief that action is only necessary when a significant event occurs—is when your symptoms escalate in intensity and frequency, causing distress not just to yourself but also to those around you. When there's a decline in sleep quality, a desire for isolation, excessive eating or drinking, or physical aggression, and you observe symptoms that deviate from your usual behavior and are increasing in intensity and frequency, causing distress to both yourself and those around you, it might be time to consult a doctor," she added.
The physician also highlighted that, despite the prevalent presence on social media, many individuals grapple with loneliness, significantly contributing to mental health issues.
She remarked, "We've discovered that our generation is experiencing unprecedented loneliness, even though we are highly active online. In reality, we find ourselves isolated in this digital realm, despite having numerous avenues for connection.
"There has never been a period where people have felt so isolated. The surge in mental health problems is undoubtedly influenced by the impact of social media."
