Osun State introduces policy document addressing maternal mortality through safe pregnancy terminati
The Osun State Government has introduced a formal policy document outlining the legal parameters for safe pregnancy termination within the state.
This initiative, as highlighted by the state government, is designed to enhance healthcare services throughout the state, with a particular focus on addressing maternal and child healthcare challenges.
Dr. Akindele Adekunle, the Special Adviser on Public Health to Governor Ademola Adeleke, officially presented the policy document in Osogbo.
Adekunle disclosed that Nigeria currently holds the second-highest burden of maternal mortality globally, following India. He emphasized that the majority of these fatalities result from identifiable causes and are avoidable.
"With Nigeria's commitment to the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targeting the eradication of all preventable maternal deaths by 2030, it becomes imperative to systematically recognize and avert each prevalent, preventable cause of maternal mortality."
"Furthermore, an important factor contributing to avoidable maternal deaths in Osun State is unsafe abortion. Hence, this policy document in Osun State aims to enhance the expertise of healthcare professionals in identifying pregnancies covered by the law, enabling ethical and safe management," he stated.
Adekunle appealed for collaboration with media stakeholders to effectively communicate the policy document and guidelines to the public, promoting societal well-being.
"The widespread dissemination of this crucial policy document will enhance the delivery of high-quality Reproductive Health services to women of child-bearing age, thereby elevating the overall health status of the state."
Dr. Emmanuel Ajah, the Country Director of MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices, the primary development partner working in conjunction with the state government to create the policy document, urged critical stakeholders to collaborate for the document's effective implementation.
He underscored the importance of ensuring that healthcare providers have a comprehensive understanding of the legal criteria for the safe termination of pregnancy.
