The federal government of Nigeria and Morocco are intensifying discussions to expedite the gas pipel
The Federal Government and the Kingdom of Morocco have increased their talks to accelerate the progress towards reaching the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline. Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Limited, made this announcement in a statement.
He remarked, "The conversation took place on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, during a meeting between the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, and the Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Ms. Leila Benali. The discussion was facilitated by NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President, Gas, Power & New Energy, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, and the Director General of the Morocco National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), Mme Amina Benkhadra, on the sidelines of the meeting."
"The discussions centered on propelling the partnership between the two nations to expedite the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project, aligning with the various Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) inked in Abuja in 2022.
Both parties underscored the project's strategic significance for their respective countries and the entire African continent. They emphasized the imperative of advancing its completion promptly, aligning with the goal of alleviating energy poverty across Africa.
It's worth noting that the Cooperation Agreement for the 48” x 5,300Km pipeline from Nigeria to Dhakia (Morocco) and 1,700km from Dhakia to Northern Morocco was initially signed in 2017. The pipeline has a capacity of 30 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year, equivalent to 3.0 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day."
"The pipeline is planned to traverse the Republic of Benin, Togo, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, and culminate in Morocco, with an additional connection to Spain.
Given the international scope of this initiative, the ECOWAS Commission bears the responsibility for facilitating inter-governmental treaties, hosting government agreements, establishing the Pipeline Higher Authority, and ensuring alignment with the AU, UN, and other pertinent international bodies.
This project, among its various objectives, aims to facilitate the monetization of Nigeria's gas resources, uphold NNPC Ltd.'s energy leadership in Africa, and foster economic and regional cooperation among African countries."
