Potential Suspension of United Nigeria Airlines Leased Planes by NCAA Following Flight Diversion

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the diversion of the United Nigeria Abuja-bound flight to the Asaba International Airport. In response, officials have indicated that the regulator might consider suspending all wet-leased aircraft under the carrier's operations.

Musa Nuhu, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, stated, "The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding United Nigeria flight NUA 0506 to Asaba and the resulting confusion in the public domain. Preliminary measures have been implemented pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation. The Authority assures the traveling public that it is committed to leaving no stone unturned, as always, to ensure the ongoing safety of the aviation industry."

In a Sunday statement, the airline explained, "United Nigeria Airlines flight NUA 0504, which departed from MM2 in Lagos heading to Abuja on November 26, 2023, was momentarily diverted to Asaba International Airport due to adverse weather conditions at the intended destination."

"At all relevant moments, the aircraft's pilot was informed of the temporary diversion and received proper briefing. However, upon safely landing in Asaba, an inaccurate announcement was made by the cabin crew, causing confusion among the passengers."

A wet-lease is a leasing agreement in which one airline (the lessor) supplies an aircraft, along with a full crew, maintenance, and insurance (ACMI), to another airline or a business serving as a broker for air travel (the lessee). Payment is typically based on the hours the aircraft is operated.
