Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Local Government Collaborate on Sustainable Water Supply

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has collaborated with the Apapa Local Development Council Area in Lagos to provide clean water to residents through the Apapa Mini-Water Works. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, focusing on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. The Chairman of Apapa LCDA, Idowu Senbanjo, highlighted the significance of addressing the challenge of inadequate potable water, emphasizing the efforts made with the support of NPA to improve the water supply situation in Apapa.

Senbanjo explained that at the project's initiation, it was identified that many of the water distribution systems were in poor condition due to neglect over almost 15 years. Consequently, efforts were made to correct these issues and ensure the restoration of functional and reliable water supply to residents. Senbanjo expressed gratitude to the NPA, acknowledging them as the primary financier that played a crucial role in making the revitalization of the mini waterworks a reality.

Earlier, Rear Admiral Austin Oyagha (retd), the Chairman of Apapa Residence Developmental Committee, disclosed that the LCDA Chairman had established a committee, the Apapa Residence Development Committee, to tackle the challenge of potable water supply. Oyagha expressed gratitude for the NPA's involvement through one of its subsidiaries, which took over sponsorship. He highlighted that the reconstruction of Liverpool Road caused significant damage to the main sections of the water distribution network. Despite challenges such as theft and unrecoverable items, the committee successfully repaired damages, replaced missing components, and implemented security measures.

Additionally, Oluwabi Ayodele, the Southwest Regional Business Manager of Lagos Water Corporation, expressed appreciation to the chairman and all stakeholders for their contributions to the project's success. During the facility tour, Ayodele urged Apapa residents to collaborate with the Lagos State Water Corporation by offering essential feedback on the functionality of the water distribution network. In cases of leakage, residents were encouraged to promptly report them to the corporation. Ayodele emphasized that buildings without the necessary facilities could only access the water project by registering with the corporation.
