Nigeria's Social Media Users Reach 36.7 Million
Data from Datareportal reveals that out of Nigeria's 103 million internet users, 36.75 million were active on social media in January 2024.
According to the digital platform, the number of Nigerians utilizing social media surged by 16 percent to 36.7 million from 31.6 million recorded in January 2023.
"The increase in Nigeria's internet penetration, reaching 45.5 percent of the total population at the beginning of January, has led to heightened social media usage," it stated.
However, data indicates that 123.4 million individuals in Nigeria remained offline from the internet at the onset of 2024, implying that 54.5 percent of the country's 226.5 million population remained disconnected.
According to Statista, a leading global research platform, Nigeria ranks among the top countries in social media usage, with users spending an average of 4 hours and 20 minutes on various social media platforms.
On average, Nigerian social media users spend approximately 2 hours and 23 minutes daily on these platforms. In comparison, Kenya leads in Africa with an average of 3 hours and 43 minutes spent daily.
Statista suggests, "This trend may be attributed to the country's predominantly young population, with the 16 to 24 age group contributing significantly to global growth."

Facebook – 36.75 million
In January, the user base of the social messaging platform surged to 36.75 million in Nigeria, marking a significant 68.9 percent rise from the 21.75 million reported in January 2023.
Additionally, YouTube boasted a user base of 28.50 million in the same period.
According to Google's advertising resources, YouTube recorded 28.50 million users in Nigeria in early 2024. This figure marks a 9.8 percent decrease from the 31.6 million Nigerian users observed at the beginning of 2023.
On the other hand, Snapchat experienced a notable increase in its user base in the country, reaching 15.11 million, reflecting a 22 percent rise during the reported period.
In early 2024, Instagram boasted a user base of 12.4 million in Nigeria, marking a substantial 74 percent surge from the 7.1 million reported in the corresponding period of 2023.
WhatsApp also experienced growth, with its user count increasing by 20 percent to 10.6 million in Nigeria in January, compared to the 8.82 million users reported in the same period of 2023.
Furthermore, LinkedIn recorded 9.1 million users in Nigeria during the same period.
In early 2024, LinkedIn boasted a membership of 9.10 million in Nigeria, showcasing growth from the 7.5 million members recorded at the beginning of 2023.
Additionally, X witnessed an expansion in its user base, reaching 5.75 million in Nigeria in early 2024, compared to the 4.95 million users reported at the start of 2023.
