Tinubu’s political associates start considering 2023 alternatives as his health wanes

POLITICAL associates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu are having a rethink about his 2023 presidential ambitions as a result of his recent health challenges that have led to him seeking medical treatment in the UK.

Although Asiwaju Tinubu has not officially declared himself a candidate for the 2023 presidential race, campaigning has begun in earnest, with his political associates opening campaign offices across Nigeria. Of late, however, a spanner has been thrown in the works as the health of the former Lagos State governor has suddenly become an issue.

Asiwaju Tinubu is currently in London receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment and earlier this week, President Muhammadu Buhari paid him a courtesy visit. With there being question marks regarding the physical ability of Asiwaju Tinubu to run, his political associates in the APC are having a rethink about his candidature.

Bearing in mind President Buhari’s medical history and that of one of his predecessors the late President Umaru Yar’adua, Nigerians are wary of another sick leader. Some APC members insist that the meetings, rallies and tours associated with campaigning demand physical strength and have advises Asiwaju Tinubu to rest and continue to act as a kingmaker.

As the debate on Asiwaju Tinubu’s ambition continues, his allies are contemplating alternatives, with one option being for him to anoint a candidate if his vigour wanes. Over the last 10 months, Asiwaju Tinubu has travelled out of Nigeria thrice largely on health grounds and it is believed he just underwent surgery in London but is expected in Nigeria before the end of August.
