Warri Wolves embark on their journey for promotion, two years after relegation from the NPFL

Having spent two seasons in the lower echelons of Nigerian football, Warri Wolves FC is gearing up for a new campaign to make their way back to the top tier. During his eight-year tenure, one significant challenge faced by former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, was Warri Wolves' struggle to establish a consistent presence in the upper echelons of the Nigerian league.

Twice, the Seasiders found themselves in the depths of relegation, the latest occurrence being in the 2019/2020 Season when they fell short of promotion, finishing behind eventual Group B2 winners, Bayelsa United.

In preparation for the upcoming 2023/2024 season, the former management, led by Moses Etu, was dismissed earlier this year, and Neville Ambekederemo assumed control. Etu, a two-time chairman of Warri Wolves, was replaced.

The new NNL season is set to kick off this weekend, but Warri Wolves' inaugural match is scheduled for November 19 against International Lagos FC at Kwale Stadium, as the Warri Township Stadium undergoes renovations.

Earlier this week, some players from Warri Wolves reached out to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, expressing concerns about financial difficulties in their camp, including issues with non-payment of sign-on fees and salaries.

However, the recently appointed chairman, Ambekederemo,The state government is actively working to ensure Warri Wolves secure promotion to the top tier this season. Ambekederemo, the new chairman, emphasized the importance of focus to the players and expressed confidence in their commitment to securing the promotion ticket.

"The new NNL season will kick off this weekend, but our matches are scheduled for next week," Ambekederemo stated. "I regularly visit the players in camp and have conveyed the government's emphasis on this promotion. The players have assured me of their readiness to fight for the ticket."

He urged the players to enhance their dedication, focus, and discipline to achieve their collective goal. Warri Wolves, having reached the semifinals of the 2023 Federation Cup in Lagos, will kick off their first two matches at home, facing Osun United in week 2 after the clash with International Lagos FC. Subsequent matches include encounters with Ikorodu City FC in Lagos, Giant Brillars FC in week four, and FC One Rocket in week five.
