The GCU Relays are poised to nurture the future generation of sports superstars
The organizers of the annual Government College Ughelli (GCU) Relays have stated that their primary goal is to cultivate exceptional secondary school athletes through inter-collegiate track and field competitions, aiming to nurture them into national sports stars.
Scheduled for November 18 in Ughelli, Delta State, the 2023 GCU Relays are a product of the GCU Old Boys Association Worldwide, led by the former PGWW, Prof. Oritsegbemi Omatete, who fondly reminisced about the golden era of school athletics in the 1950s and 60s.
According to the organizers, "The Old Western Region used to host the Grier Cup, a prominent athletics competition divided into zones A to D. This platform witnessed intense and thrilling competitions among schools, giving rise to remarkable athletes."
"To uphold this central objective of the GCU Relays, the succeeding PGWW, Arch. Charles Majoroh, introduced a monetary award for both the Victor Ludorum and Victrix Ludorum," the statement affirmed.
In the inaugural edition, the spotlight shone on the fleet-footed and gracefully built Godson Oghenebrume, who showcased his talents for Afiesere Secondary School in Ughelli.
The second edition featured the remarkable performance of Sunday Akitan from Yewa College, Ilaro, Ogun State, who clocked an unbeaten 10.88 seconds in the Boys' 100m. Over the past few editions, several athletes have emerged from the dominant Hussey College, Warri, and Urhobo College, Effurun. However, none have quite matched the charisma and brilliance displayed by both Godson Brume and Sunday Akitan, who have proudly represented the nation in both junior and senior categories of track and field events.
