Ondo schoolboy becomes Guinness World Record holder
Gbenga Ezekiel, a senior secondary school one student at Ijapo High School in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has entered the Guinness World Records for the most skips in one minute on one leg. Ezekiel recorded 265 skips in his attempt, breaking the previous record of 262 skips held by Rasel Islam of Bangladesh.
Four months after his attempt at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure, the 16-year-attempt old's became a record.
The achievement was communicated to the Nigeria Rope Skipping Federation's national coach, Chubuisi Ukandu, and was also updated on the Guinness World Records website.
"The most skips in one minute on one leg is 265 and was achieved by Gbenga Ezekiel (Nigeria), in Akure, Nigeria, on 31 October 2022. The attempt took place at the Akure stadium, according to Guinness World Records' website.
Ezekiel had hoped for approval for the records after his attempt last October, and he couldn't contain his joy when it was ratified.
"I am overjoyed that my record has been confirmed. I feel so honored to be a Guinness World Record holder after being inspired by videos I saw on the internet.
"I appreciate my coach's efforts in introducing rope skipping to me and other students. "I am proud of what I have accomplished and hope to do more in the future," Ezekiel told our correspondent.
Ezekiel is the first athlete from Ondo State to achieve a Guinness World Records title, as well as the first Nigerian and African rope skipper.
