Nigeria's Bid to Host AFCON 2027 Unsuccessful
Nigeria's joint bid to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), alongside Benin Republic, has been defeated by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. As a reminder, Minister of Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh had arrived in Egypt on Tuesday, accompanied by representatives from the Nigeria Football Federation, to present the country's bid for hosting AFCON in 2027.
However, the choice to grant co-hosting rights to the three countries was made by CAF's Executive Council members during a meeting held in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday.
Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have never previously been hosts of the Africa Cup of Nations.
In 1980, Nigeria hosted the tournament and emerged as champions by defeating Algeria 3-0 in the final. Two decades later, Nigeria co-hosted the 2000 edition with Ghana and reached the final, narrowly losing to Cameroon in a penalty shootout.
In a separate development on Wednesday, the CAF Executive Council members awarded the 2025 AFCON edition to Morocco. This marks Morocco's second time as host, having previously hosted the tournament in 1988.
Meanwhile, the 2023 AFCON is scheduled to take place in Côte d’Ivoire in 2024. Côte d’Ivoire had previously hosted the tournament in 1984 for the first time.
