Napoli Bounce Back After Osimhen's Impact, While Pogba Continues to Face Challenges
Napoli and Victor Osimhen have reconciled ahead of their upcoming match against Fiorentina on Sunday. This reconciliation follows a disagreement that had the potential to worsen their already struggling title defense, but it has now been resolved thanks to the Nigerian striker.Napoli's official TikTok account previously caused outrage by mocking Victor Osimhen's penalty miss during their match against Bologna a week ago. In response, Osimhen's agent, Roberto Calenda, threatened legal action, and Nigeria's sports minister intervened to support his countryman through diplomatic channels.
However, Osimhen's impressive performances in subsequent matches against Udinese and Lecce, where he scored goals in both, helped stabilize Napoli's season. They currently sit in third place in the Serie A standings, just four points behind the joint leaders, Inter Milan and AC Milan.
Osimhen also defended Napoli's supporters against accusations of racism, which hurt a fan base known for its lack of history in racist incidents but often faces abuse from other regions of Italy, especially the wealthier north.
Napoli showed renewed enthusiasm after an unfortunate loss to Real Madrid, proving their competitiveness against some of Europe's top teams. This positive atmosphere came amid concerns about a series of earthquakes in the Campi Flegrei area near the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Napoli's president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, expressed his desire for the club to defend their title and compete in the Champions League, despite the departure of their Scudetto-winning coach, Luciano Spalletti, and the sale of Kim Min-jae to Bayern Munich. De Laurentiis also mentioned the ongoing contract extension negotiations with Osimhen, which he hopes will be resolved soon.
Napoli faces a challenging match on Sunday against Fiorentina, a team also on 14 points in the Serie A standings. Fiorentina has shown promise this season but faces Ferencvaros in the Conference League on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, fourth-placed Juventus, also on 14 points, prepares for the first Turin derby of the season on Saturday. Coach Massimiliano Allegri is hoping to have strikers Dusan Vlahovic and Arkadiusz Milik fit for the match after they missed the goalless draw against Atalanta last Sunday.
In the meantime, Paul Pogba is anxiously awaiting the results of the 'B' sample from the doping test, a potentially career-ending situation for the French midfielder. This follows over a year of injuries and off-field challenges since his return to Juventus.
A positive result expected on Thursday would likely result in a four-year ban from football for Pogba, potentially leading to the rescission of his contract with Juventus.
A player worth keeping an eye on is Federico Chiesa. The Italian forward has had a promising start to the season, featuring in all seven of Juventus' league matches and scoring four goals in his new role as a center-forward. Previously used as a wide attacker by Juventus, Chiesa will aim to stay injury-free through the weekend and make a strong impression to earn his first international cap under new Italy coach Luciano Spalletti.
Chiesa was part of Spalletti's squad for last month's Euro 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine but had to withdraw due to injury. He will be in contention for a starting spot with Italy against Malta and the Group C leaders, England, should he maintain his fitness.
