NFF President Optimistic About Super Eagles Winning 2023 AFCON
Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, is confident that the Super Eagles will emerge victorious in the upcoming 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Super Eagles secured an early qualification for the 34th edition scheduled to kick off on January 11, 2024.
Placed in Group A alongside the hosts, Guinea Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea, the Super Eagles are set to face Equatorial Guinea on January 14, followed by a crucial match against the hosts on January 18 at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, boasting a seating capacity of 60,000.
During a visit to the NFF Secretariat in Abuja by Ivory Coast’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Kalilou Traore, Gusau commended the efforts of the country in organizing what is expected to be one of the best editions of AFCON. Gusau recalled Nigeria's performance in the 1984 AFCON hosted by Ivory Coast, where the Super Eagles reached the final and finished as runners-up.
Expressing optimism, Gusau stated, “Our two teams (Super Eagles and Elephants) are in the same group at the finals, and it would be a very interesting game when we play on January 18. We know the whole of Africa and even the world will be focused on Ivory Coast before, during, and after the AFCON, and our team will be ready to do its best. This time, we will work very hard to emerge as champions.”
