Lionel Messi's 2022 World Cup Jerseys Now Up for Auction
Lionel Messi's jerseys from Argentina's victorious 2022 World Cup campaign are scheduled to be auctioned in December 2023, with the proceeds going to charity. Messi wore six different jerseys during the World Cup, including the one from the final against France. All jerseys are signed by Messi and come with a certificate of authenticity.
The auction is organized by Lelands, a leading sports memorabilia auction house known for auctioning jerseys worn by legendary athletes such as Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, and Mickey Mantle. Messi's global icon status is expected to attract significant interest from fans and collectors. The proceeds from the auction will benefit the FC Barcelona Foundation, which supports educational and social programs for children in need.
Messi wore the jerseys during the first halves of group-stage matches against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, as well as later games against Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia, and the final against France, where Argentina emerged victorious.
If Messi's jerseys fetch over $10 million, it would set a new record for the most valuable sports memorabilia ever auctioned. The current record is held by Michael Jordan's jersey from his NBA finals run with the Chicago Bulls in 1998, which sold for $10.1 million last year.
The auction will be facilitated by US tech startup AC Momento, which assists athletes in managing their memorabilia collections. Messi's jerseys will be available for public viewing free of charge during the auction period from November 30 to December 14.
