Jose Peseiro Establishes Stringent Standards for Player Selection to Represent Nigeria
Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, emphasized that the benchmark for individuals representing the Nigerian men's senior national team must always be of the utmost quality.
In response to the Super Eagles' performance after concluding their October international break with a victory over a ten-man Mozambique, head coach Jose Peseiro emphasized the importance of maintaining the highest standards for players representing the Nigerian national team.
After securing their first victory in friendly matches since 2019, with a less-than-impressive 3-2 win against Mozambique, Peseiro commented on Tuesday.
"After another training and match period, with the team and staff working together, we have reinforced various aspects and identified areas for improvement," Peseiro stated.
"The standard for any player representing the Super Eagles must always be of the highest caliber. The players' efforts were excellent, resulting in our first friendly game victory in almost five years."
Nigeria faced some challenges as they came from behind to defeat Mozambique. Mozambique's Faisal Abdul Bangal scored first in the seventh minute, catching Francis Uzoho off guard.
Terem Moffi equalized for the Super Eagles in the 18th minute with a well-placed rebound, and Frank Onyeka scored his first international goal with a powerful shot in the 30th minute. Moses Simon extended Nigeria's lead with a penalty in the 45th minute, despite Mozambique having a player sent off in the 37th minute.
However, the Southern Africans had a strong second half, reducing the score to 3-2 through Geny Catamo in the 55th minute.
On Tuesday, Peseiro expressed his thoughts on the game on social media.
Nonetheless, Peseiro admitted after Monday's match that he was dissatisfied with his team's 3-2 victory, feeling they should have scored up to eight goals.
"My players may have thought it would be easy because Mozambique had a red card," Peseiro stated.
"Last time, I told them that conceding two goals against any team is unacceptable, but today, we did the same. We created many chances, almost 13 shots, one-on-one situations, but we didn't capitalize on them.
"We had numerous opportunities, and for that, I am not pleased because we did not maintain the same level of concentration as we did against Saudi Arabia. We should have scored as many as eight goals. Our crossing and corner execution were subpar. This saddens me."
