Edo athletes faced off against their older siblings in Asaba
Edo State officials have expressed their joy over the state's third-place finish at the recently concluded Seventh National Youth Games in Asaba.
Team Delta claimed the championship for the seventh time by accumulating a total of 51 gold, 34 silver, and 31 bronze medals. Team Lagos secured the second position with 21 gold, 19 silver, and 21 bronze medals, narrowly edging out Team Edo, who finished in third place with 21 gold, 15 silver, and 17 bronze medals.
Bayelsa and Kwara took the fourth and fifth positions with 20 gold, 7 silver, 16 bronze, and 13 gold, 14 silver, and 9 bronze medals, respectively. Team Ogun secured the sixth position with 11 gold, 12 silver, and 9 bronze medals, followed by the FCT, which emerged in the seventh position with 11 gold, 10 silver, and 16 bronze medals.
Team Anambra claimed the eighth position with 7 gold, 6 silver, and 9 bronze medals, while Team Rivers settled for the ninth position with 6 gold, 16 silver, and 13 bronze medals.
After the closing ceremony at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Sports Commission, Dr. Emmanuel Igbinosa, praised the athletes for their outstanding performance in representing Edo.
Dr. Igbinosa, elated by the achievement, expressed gratitude to the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for his unwavering commitment to sports development, particularly at the grassroots level.
"I am immensely proud of our athletes for giving their very best, even though they were competing against much older athletes in the competition. In the end, they secured the third position on the medals' table," Igbinosa remarked.
He also commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for the significant support provided, which enabled the team to hold a closed training camp for the first time in Edo.
