Coach Garcia asserts Osimhen's affection for Napoli following their TikTok disagreement
Napoli coach Rudi Garcia has emphasized Victor Osimhen's affection for Napoli despite the recent controversy stemming from a highly contentious video posted on the club's official TikTok account.
The Napoli TikTok account, known for its somewhat cheeky videos featuring players, stirred up controversy when it posted two videos centered around Osimhen.
In one video, Napoli's TikTok administrator poked fun at Osimhen for his missed penalty in the 0-0 draw against Bologna in a recent Serie A match. This drew ire from Osimhen, and his agent, Roberto Calenda, even threatened legal action against Napoli.
In another video, Osimhen was humorously compared to a coconut, further fueling Osimhen's frustration.
Despite these issues, Osimhen managed to put on an impressive performance in Napoli's 4-1 victory over Udinese. He scored a goal and showed his determination on the pitch.
Coach Garcia expressed his hope that Napoli could move past the recent drama and reiterated Osimhen's love for the club's shirt. He clarified that no one intended to be hurtful with the TikTok videos.
"In the last couple of days, there was some misunderstanding due to clumsy behavior. No one had the intention of causing harm, neither the TikTok video featuring Victor nor Victor himself when he removed his images from social media. These were instinctive reactions and can be understood," the manager stated after Wednesday's game.
Regarding Osimhen deleting images of himself in Napoli gear from his social media, Garcia downplayed the situation, saying, "It's his social media account, and he can do as he pleases with it. What I can say is that he loves this jersey and will give his all for Napoli this season."
When asked if he had thanked Osimhen for his goal and improved performance, Garcia clarified, "I complimented him, which is different. I've had a great relationship with Victor since I arrived. I'm delighted that he scored a goal, and strikers always want to find the net. He had been unlucky, hitting the crossbar and post in recent games, but I told him to stay focused. He also provided an assist since I had designated him as the penalty taker for the evening, although he decided to pass that responsibility to Zielinski."
