Amusan kicks off Diamond League season in Xiamen
Tobi Amusan, the three-time African Games champion and world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, will commence her Wanda Diamond League season in Xiamen on April 20th.
Amusan joins a prestigious lineup of 12 Olympic gold medalists and 27 world champions set to showcase their talents at the Egret Stadium in Xiamen.
In her title defense, the 26-year-old will compete against three reigning global champions in the sprint hurdles: Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, world champion Danielle Williams, and world indoor champion Devynne Charlton.
Amusan secured her third consecutive Wanda Diamond League title in Eugene, Oregon last September, clocking an impressive season best of 12.33 seconds.
Puerto Rico's Camacho-Quinn secured second place with a time of 12.38 seconds, while USA's Harrison claimed third with a time of 12.44 seconds.
As the 2022 world champion and holder of the world record at 12.12 seconds, she is considered one of the top contenders to challenge Camacho-Quinn for Olympic gold in Paris in August.
She is also vying to secure her fourth consecutive victory, aiming to replicate her feat as the second woman in Diamond League history to claim a hat-trick of 100m hurdles titles in 2023.
Amusan achieved this milestone on the same track in Oregon, where she had claimed victory at the World Championships the previous year and set the current world record of 12.12 seconds.
However, Amusan appears likely to miss the second Diamond League meet of the year in Suzhou, China, as her name was excluded from the confirmed list of sprint hurdlers for the event.
Scheduled for April 27, the Suzhou meet will mark the second of two Chinese events to launch the 2024 Wanda Diamond League season.
While Camacho-Quinn, Williams, and Charlton were slated to compete in Suzhou, China, Amusan, unless there's a last-minute change, will likely return to either Europe or the USA.
