"I no longer found pleasure in playing football," Eden Hazard elucidates the reason behind his retir
Former Chelsea and Real Madrid winger Eden Hazard has disclosed that his decision to retire from football was driven by a loss of enjoyment in the sport. The former Belgian captain made the surprising retirement announcement last Tuesday at the age of 32.
Hazard participated in a charity match held in Calais, France, where he shared the field with fellow retired players like Didier Deschamps, Robert Pires, and former Real Madrid midfielder Christian Karembeu, among others.
During the match, he notched a goal and provided six assists. At the event, he opened up about his decision-making process leading up to his retirement last summer.
"I had always maintained that I would step away from the game once it stopped being enjoyable for me on the field. I had no desire to continue playing solely for financial gain," he shared with L'Avenir.
Explaining his choice, he added, "It was the most suitable solution. Training was no longer enjoyable, and I found myself sidelined during matches. The decision was straightforward."
He concluded, "In life, not everything can be explained. I am content with my decision. I'm happy and have numerous interests outside of football, allowing me to make a peaceful choice."
