Why Tinubu's Government Would Halt Akpabio's Impeachment Plot

There are indications that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration intends to prevent the impeachment of Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio. It has come to light that lawmakers opposed to Akpabio are reportedly plotting his impeachment due to his close ties to the executive and other concerns.

According to sources, the Tinubu administration is concerned that an impeachment of the Senate President could lead to a wider impact, potentially affecting the House of Representatives, which they are keen to avoid.

Despite their discomfort with recent statements made by Akpabio, sources informed Leadership Newspaper that the Presidency is cautious not to fall into the hands of political opponents who might use the National Assembly to undermine the President politically.

There have been grievances among lawmakers who were unsuccessful in the leadership struggle and those who did not secure desirable committee assignments in both chambers of the National Assembly.

Akpabio's remarks about a 'token' for senators during the holiday have prompted members of President Bola Tinubu's inner circle to initiate a "secret but determined search" for Akpabio's replacement.

It has been reported that moves to impeach Akpabio by some disgruntled lawmakers are allegedly being led by two lawmakers from the North West. Senators from various parts of the National Assembly are already convening and strategizing for this audacious move.

The Senate is scheduled to reconvene on September 26 after the recess.

When contacted, an anonymous lawmaker expressed frustration, stating, "We have been treated as disposable items with no rights or responsibilities. We have no say or influence as lawmakers. Everything is dictated from the Villa, where the man who supported the Speaker resides. The 10th Assembly is the worst we've seen. We are more like a unit, not even a department, of the executive arm."

"It's no secret that the influential presidential aide and his associates in the Villa compiled the standing committees, ensuring the elimination of all known or perceived opponents of Abbas. They didn't mind if all committees were given to the opposition."

"It's very unfortunate because in this same chamber in 2019, some of us made sacrifices for them. Even Wase stepped aside for them, but here we are. So if anything happens to Akpabio's tenure, it will have a contagious effect on Abbas, and no one can prevent it," the source concluded.
