Hillary Otsu Views Obaseki's Move to PDP as a Curse, Not a Blessing

Hillary Otsu, the Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has expressed the view that Governor Godwin Obaseki is more of a curse than a blessing to the party. Otsu highlighted that Obaseki's tenure has resulted in unfavorable outcomes for the PDP in both elections and overall party performance in the state.

Governor Obaseki joined the PDP in June 2020 after being disqualified by the All Progressives Congress (APC) during his re-election bid over alleged questionable certificates.

Otsu, in an interview with The Nation, emphasized that under Obaseki's leadership, Edo not only lost the presidential election, but the state also failed to secure a single National Assembly seat. He contrasted this with previous years when the PDP, led by Chief Dan Orbih, had notable successes in elections.

According to Otsu, Obaseki's entry into the PDP turned out to be a curse rather than a blessing, evident in the perceived dissatisfaction on the streets of Benin City and other major cities. He pointed out that many candidates fielded by Obaseki were unpopular, and voters were aware of the irregularities surrounding their emergence.

Otsu argued that the lack of coordination and unpopularity of Obaseki's candidates led to PDP supporters working against them, resulting in victories for other parties such as the APC and Labour. He highlighted unprecedented losses in key areas, including Edo Central and South Senatorial seats.

In conclusion, Otsu suggested that there was a collective effort to demonstrate that Obaseki was not a popular governor. He expressed satisfaction that the national body recognized the significance of the Legacy PDP in Obaseki's electoral success and noted that, for the first time in history, the PDP lost Edo in a presidential election and failed to secure any National Assembly seat.
